ACCESSORIES

IN FASHION
EVERYTHING IS REINVENTED

It is very common for trends from the past to revert to trends in current times. This has already happened in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and many others. And it will always happen.

Trends worn by our parents and grandparents return to the scene, and vintage pieces leave the back of the closet straight into streetwear.

After all, the fashion cycle is like that! Striking pieces from previous decades always come back, but more modern and suited to our current needs.

The success of accessories in a production is not new. Considered as multipliers of looks, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and so many other pieces are synonymous with versatility, as they give more individuality to the look, often in a unique and exclusive way.

Whether to represent beliefs, social status, protection and of course, to bring more personality to the style, accessories have an interesting trajectory in fashion, which goes from antiquity to the present times.

We set up a timeline from the beginnings, going back to the Paleolithic period, where the first traces of accessories were found.

Stone - Stone Age

The very name of the Era already refers to the main element used in the adornments during this period. In addition to stones, shells, feathers and even animal teeth represented power and luck, they were even used as a talisman.

Black Glass - Mesopotamia BC

5 thousand years before Christ, what predominated among the accessories was black glass, a material considered noble at the time. There are indications of necklaces made of the material in Mesopotamian civilizations. These adornments were used as status symbols to demonstrate luxury and power.

The Geometric Shapes of the Greeks and Romans

Greek ornaments were rich in geometric shapes, which are still in trend today. In addition, details of mythological scenes and symbols brought more exclusivity to the pieces. Made primarily of gold and silver, these jewelry oozed elegance with thin, minimalist designs.

The Roman accessories prevalent in 200 BC also followed this same pattern.

The golden taking over Egypt

Between the years 1567 and 1085 BC, the trend of adornments was dictated by the Egyptians.

In this period between the transition from the Middle Kingdom to the New Kingdom, gold predominated, despite the scarcity of gold in Egypt.

The models valued art and even today the Egyptian jewelry style is a reference in the accessories market.

An example of this is the Greek Eye, so present in several pieces and with a meaning of protection and power.

Serpents and other animals also greatly reflect the Egyptian style to this day.

20th century

Jumping into the 20th century, precisely to the 20s and 30s, we need to highlight a very important name in fashion: Coco Chanel.

The stylist, together with other colleagues, was largely responsible for a turnaround in consumer behavior and in the jewelry market.

Chanel encouraged the creation of more accessible and universal pieces in a clear attempt to adapt to the world economic scenario of the time.

Chanel launched a collection of bijouterie fantaisie, jewelry with a special design, but made with non-precious materials.

This form of production was designed to reduce its cost and make more women able to adorn themselves at a time when jewelry was a maximum symbol of status.

It is important to remember that bijoux in French means “jewel”. Therefore, the word fantaisie goes together with the word bijoux in the name of this collection, indicating that the jewelry is “fantasy” in a non-literal translation.

Another great feature of Coco Chanel is the use of pearls. In the 1920s, approximately, Chanel was given a six-strand pearl necklace from Dmitri Pavlovich, the Russian monarch who lived a romance with her at the time. Hence came the iconic phrase attributed to Coco Chanel: “A woman needs twists and turns of pearls”. Chanel was known for mixing fake and real pearls, and has immortalized the accessory as a symbol of elegance and fashion status.

Accessories from the 40s, 50s and 60s are trends to this day

Those years were home to a great burst of youth in every way.

Many references to accessories came directly from the cinema and the catwalks with strong women ahead of their time, who left their mark on the world and influenced many other women!

40's - What was a trend?

It was in this decade that women began to work outside and accessories became more practical items.

Costume jewelry gained prominence, as gemstone imports were suspended due to the war. Semi-precious stones such as citrine and aquamarine were used in the manufacture of the pieces.

The jewelry market reached its peak in 1940, very influenced by Hollywood stars, and having America as the center of creation and commercialization.

The military theme was very present in the creation of accessories, such as symbols of hearts, medallions and wings in different materials. Other pieces that had great prominence at that time are bracelets, brooches, hairpins, hair ornaments with rhinestones and stars.

50's

An iconic piece from the 1950s was Elizabeth Taylor's Krupp diamond.

The diva owned a vast collection of accessories, which contained famous pieces that belonged to personalities from the 19th century. XIX and even to monarchies.

The actress' most famous pieces were the “Krupp diamond” and the “La Peregrina” pearl, which she received as a gift from her husband.

Her style influenced fashion with exuberance, luxury, pearls and a lot of sparkle.

We also have Marilyn Monroe, who was a major forerunner in fashion and influence in pop culture. Marilyn is famous for the phrase "Diamonds are a woman's best friend" from the movie "Men Prefer Blondes", 1953.

Even though in the movies, Marilyn's style was more luxurious, with lots of glitter and diamonds, in her photo shoots and in her everyday life, she wore more minimalist jewelry.

Smaller and medium earrings, pearl necklaces and even chokers were her choices.

Amazing how even today these pieces look beautiful in any look.

60's

The 60s brought news to the fashion world, with greater possibilities and accessibility for the “ordinary” woman.

The decade allowed for more freedom and expression, with the period’s fashion being dubbed “youth fashion”.

Earrings of geometric shapes began to appear and the pearls continued to be darlings of the public. The necklaces were made from natural materials such as amber and coral.

Another feature of the 60s was the use of very shiny earrings and necklaces to stand out against the background of a monochromatic look.

Beads became popular at this time and were always long, made of fabric, metal, plastic or stones.

It is in 1961 that Audrey Hepburn becomes a phenomenon in her iconic role of Breakfast at Tiffany's and greatly influences the style of the time. The actress had a more delicate air, and liked to bet on minimalist and classic pearls and accessories.

The 70's

In the 70s, fashion made room for freedom and fun. Without producing anything necessarily new, this decade mixed everything that was trending before, creatively, with a glam rock and crazy disco vibe.

Thus, what dominated the world of accessories were vibrant colors, colorful fur bracelets and extravagant pearls. Even the current long earrings with a pearl at the tip are inspired by the 70s.

As a pop culture reference, we can mention the singer Cher who followed the hippie fashion of the 60's with her super colorful fun accessories and then the 70's glam rock style, full of attitude.

Some accessories that were successful at that time:

  • Neutral base earrings;

  • Thin chain with delicate pendant;

  • Long necklace with small arrangements or pendant that goes below the chest;

  • Paste Statement;

  • Neutral ring: with minimalistic style of small or solid stones;

  • Metal bracelet.

80's

What marked the 80s was the boldness of fashion at the time. The accessories were big and shiny. Beaded necklaces, earrings, jelly bracelets, and large brooches were darlings.

This year, jewelry also stood out and became popular because of its accessibility, essential at a time when people wanted to explore and express their individuality more.

80s earrings were big and dramatic.

Snap earrings were the protagonists of the looks, as real piercings were considered heavy for the look. Pearls and synthetic stones were in vogue. Rings were often used at night events to bring confidence and richness to the look.

Necklaces were either beaded or with large pendants, and it was at this time that real gold or gold-plated pieces became women's favorites. Crystal and cut glass also completed the looks.
The bracelets appealed to a more teen audience and were plastic in neon colors.

Celebrities who marked the time as fashion icons were:

The 90's

Who would say it's been 30 years, but we can prove that even distant, the 90's are super current.

The accessories that marked the years in which the internet began to emerge and change the world are:

Choker choker:

No one imagined that the style of a tight-fitting necklace would come back, but it came back with force! Its design ranges from straight minimalist to well-crafted and designed decorations. The classic 1990s teen movie “The Little Girls of Beverly Hills”, iconic for its fashion-setting looks, immortalized the use of the thin black choker.

2000s accessories

Fashion is a form of expression and the trends that mark an era, in general, reflect the values of that society.

For example, nowadays fashion prioritizes the use of comfortable pieces, but at the same time elegant and stylish. This reflects the pandemic time we live in and spend most of our day at home.

The 2000s, on the other hand, were marked by modernity and all the promises that the turn of the millennium promised.

Silver and futuristic accessories were all the rage at the time.

Piercings, chains and everything that referred to the future appeared in the accessories of the 2000s.

It's hard to choose a favourite, isn't it? But let's continue our accessories timeline.

2010 accessories

Seems like yesterday, doesn't it? We miss it, but to our delight, some trends from that time continue to this day.

Who remembers the wide bracelets craze, hit by Giovanna Antonelli's character Heloísa in Salve Jorge?

Another dominant trend was skull pendants. In earrings, necklaces, bracelets, everywhere they were present. In gold, silver, with rhinestones or without, with bows, for all tastes!

And the maxi accessories? Huge rings began to have more space, especially after the soap opera Passione. In the same vein, we have the cascade earrings of stones or pearls, statement pieces that represent femininity.

Finally, we still had the return of some classic accessories, such as flowers, pets and stars (like stars).
